RTX Technologies (RTX), formerly Raytheon Technologies, is an American aerospace and defense company. It's best known products include Tomahawk and Sidewinder missiles, Stinger and Javelin man-portable launchers, and the Patriot anti-missile system.
RTX has historically been a safe and stable investment, but it is currently undergoing a streak of bad headlines, including a large payment needed to repair faulty engines and the loss of a major contract following revelations that its technology could be exposed to sanctioned companies.
Reviewing RTX's balance sheet, it has been a steady grower, with revenue and earnings growth outpacing the growth of its liabilities. The company has recently focused on growing through acquisitions, and it is still integrating its most recent merger, United Technologies, which formerly traded under the ticker symbol UTX.
This merger has created a massive aerospace conglomerate, which is expected to streamline efficiency and profitability for all involved parties, as well as make RTX even more indispensable to the US military-industrial complex for the foreseeable future.
The recent merger, combined with the difficulties described above, have caused some concern that RTX's future sales, revenue, earnings, and free cash flow growth will be slowed, and may even turn negative for a period of time. In my analysis, it appears that the most vulnerable of these metrics is Raytheon's free cash flow. I do not expect any long-term issues.
The company does appear to be fairly-valued at its current market price, but I do not yet see a sufficient margin of safety. With that said, RTX is a premium company that is used to trading at a premium earnings multiple, so if one assumes that RTX will return to previous premiums, this could be an opportune time to buy.
