The Camel's Dangerous Moment
Like many animals, camels also have mating rituals. The difference is that theirs is unique. During estrus, males secrete a pigment from a gland used to attract females. The dullah, or gulla, is a pink, inflatable sac, similar to a tongue, that hangs from the side of the camel's mouth. The camel closes its nostrils and inflates parts of its soft palate, forming an organ that it uses to strike females. This is followed by gurgling sounds and foaming at the mouth. Camels are known to remove this from their mouth when attempting to court a female camel or assert dominance over other males.
