The new old clock
When I was a wee lad, not to long after the middle of the last century, I fell in love with my Uncle Bob's tall case clock. To me at about three feet tall it was absolutely enormous! If memory serves, and it is getting foggy with time, the clock had been the center piece of the lobby of the local bank. It was truly magnificent! It occupied the space between the front windows in the formal dining room that overlooked the lake. This room also featured murals by the famous painter Rufus Porter who went on to found Scientific American. His paintings lead to the house being placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Sadly when they sold the house to move to a much smaller home on Cape Cod I believe they included the clock in the sale. It was simply to large for any room in the new house. I have no idea what has become of that grand old clock.
My love of tall case clocks has continued over the many decades since I last heard that clocks Westminster Chime. Though it's much smaller and simpler in design, as of this very afternoon there is once again a working tall case clock in our family.
This is my first attempt at a Ken Burns-esque little video. Shot hand-held with my cell phone it's nowhere near as smooth as my steadicam work. There is also quite a bit of background noise from the open window. The steady hiss is from water flowing over the mill dam across the street from my house. Unfortunately during the shot a few cars also drive by. Also let me apologize for the vertical format. That's the only way I could fit the whole clock in the shot with the camera I was using. This is really intended for viewing on a cell phone anyway.
