The events unfold in Japan in the year 2111. The world of the future is almost completely automated. Drones, "smart suits," personal electronic secretaries, and homes with variable environments are an integral part of everyday life, and the cyberneticization of the body no longer surprises anyone. People have entrusted all their most important decisions, shaping their futures, and ensuring social security to a system called "Sybil." It determines the abilities and mental state of each person, as well as their Crime Coefficient—a value related to the likelihood of a person committing a crime. All data is displayed in a special profile, the "Psycho-Pass," which determines a person's position in society.
Those whose Crime Coefficient exceeds the permissible limit must undergo compulsory treatment or, if their Crime Coefficient is off the charts, are subject to extermination. Special teams from the Public Safety Bureau are tasked with solving crimes and capturing potential criminals. Akane Tsunemori, a young idealist, is recruited to join them. Akane will meet the punishers—potential criminals in the service of the state, extraordinary and experienced individuals—and discover that real life is very different from what is written in school textbooks and taught in university lectures.
