In recent decades, the internet has undergone rapid development, unfortunately not all of it for the better:

If you navigate the online world these days, it's practically a case of being constantly photographed by complete strangers while strolling through town, holding up a clearly legible sign with a detailed profile and a comprehensive list of the last 100 things you've done.

While this might not bother you too much in your everyday online life, everyone has the need—and, above all, the right—to move freely and unobserved through their world from time to time.

Whether offline or online.

Unfortunately, it's not technically that easy to browse the internet more freely and anonymously. But thankfully, there are a large number of volunteers who operate the so-called "Tor network."

Tor comes from "The Onion Router." No, not quite.

It's more about the layers of an onion.

When you use the Tor network to browse, your device no longer connects you directly to the website you want to visit. Instead, your data travels through several layers.

The browser uses an encrypted connection to a random Tor server.

Through this first connection, a second encrypted connection is used to exchange data with another Tor server. And through this connection, a third encrypted connection is used.

Only then does your data reach the website you actually want to visit.

What's special about this type of routing is that each Tor server cannot see the encrypted data of the other Tor servers.

This means that none of the Tor servers knows who you are or where you're browsing at any given time. Even if they were being monitored, they could never reveal this information.

So, by using Tor, you remain largely anonymous.

Phew. Encryption layers, Tor network... that all sounds pretty complicated. But luckily, using the Tor network is much, much easier than explaining it: All you need is the "Tor Browser," a special version of Firefox.

Simply go to "torproject.org" and click "download Tor," download it, extract it, launch it, and click "connect" once – that's it.

Now you can surf the web as usual, just more anonymously than before.

But even if you don't mind your data being collected, analyzed, and sold by advertising companies, and you also don't have a problem with intelligence agencies hoarding it—to, well, let's see what they can do with it in the coming decades—maybe someday they'll find something they WANT to use against you...
