For today’s buttercream flowers piping tutorial I will show you how to pipe a tulip! These easy piped flowers look amazing on spring flower cakes and floral cupcakes. These buttercream tulips would make the perfect decorations for an Easter or Mother’s Day dessert as well! For this beginner flower piping tutorial we are using a curved petal tip and some pink buttercream frosting, but you could use whatever colours you would like to pipe these easy spring flowers! I’m also using a leaf tip with some green buttercream, which is optional but adds a nice spring touch with the pop of green.

Buttercream Recipe: (Video:    • Easy American buttercream recipe - pe...  )

Ingredients
1/2 Cup butter softened to room temperature 113g
2 Cups powdered sugar 200g
1 Teaspoon vanilla extract 4g
1-2 Tablespoons milk 15-30g

Directions:
In a large bowl if using a hand mixer or in the bowl of your stand mixer cream butter on medium low speed for 2-3 minutes or until fluffy and pale in colour. Add 1/2 of the powdered sugar and mix for 2 minutes. Add remaining powdered sugar and mix for another 2 minutes. Your buttercream should be fluffy, pale and thick at this point. Add vanilla and 1 tablespoon of milk. Mix well. If the buttercream is still too thick/stiff add another tablespoon of milk and continue mixing. You will want a medium consistency buttercream to pipe your flowers with! For my tulip petals I used a small amount of Wilton gel food colouring in rose petal pink. For the leaves I used a small amount of Wilton gel colouring in moss green.

Buttercream tulip piping instructions:

Begin by attaching a square of parchment paper to a piping nail. Holding your curved petal tip with the wider end at the parchment paper, apply pressure and turn your flower nail to create a mound in the center of the flower nail. Pipe a second mound on top to build up the height needed for our tulip flower. This is the base that we will use to pipe our tulip. Holding your tip right at the parchment paper, perpendicular to the piping nail and nice and tight to the base, we will start piping petals. To pipe each petal, apply pressure and pull up along the base, pulling toward the center once you reach the top. Release pressure and sharply pull away. Pipe the next petal across from the first one.

Continue alternating sides, ensuring that all the petals are overlapping for a nice buttercream tulip. Add leaves using your green buttercream and leaf piping tip. Tuck the tip right next to the buttercream tulip with the pointed ends facing up and down and the "V" shapes pointed out. Rest the tip on the piping nail, apply pressure and pull out, pulling away while still applying a slight amount of pressure for a nice pointed tip. Place the finished flowers in the fridge or freezer for 10-20 minutes to firm up and then transfer them to your cakes or cupcakes!
