André Franquin - Good For...
This book offers the opportunity to discover, for the first time, Franquin's drawings created for his loved ones. When you're a renowned cartoonist caught up in the creative process and the relentless pace of publications, there's no time to rush from shop to shop in search of hypothetical gifts for loved ones. Franquin had found the solution. Easy, practical, and deeply personal, the practice of writing "greetings" and other "gift certificates" on paper became commonplace in the Franquin family. Sketched bouquets and drawn presents were offered while waiting for the gifts to materialize later… The drawings we find here were never intended for publication. Conceived and imagined for birthdays or holidays like Valentine's Day, they possess the allure of rare drawings that we discover with curiosity. It's a privilege to be able to admire these unpublished drawings spanning a period from the 1950s to the 1990s. We can appreciate the artist's skillful use of a variety of techniques, moving from brush to pen, from Rotring pen to pencil, or even using a simple ballpoint pen. We will also be struck by Franquin's use of color and the evolution of his style, reflecting the different periods he lived through. Initially modestly inaugurated by two small "gift certificates" intended for his in-laws, Franquin quickly developed a taste for the exercise, refining his little drawings into gems of graphic design and inventiveness. They also express the author's deep affection and benevolent generosity for his loved ones.
