This video demonstrates how to add a "water caustics" effect to the water in Unity. Follow the steps carefully. The instructions and resources are also listed below.

Made with Unity 5.6 also tested in Unity 2018. If unity's projector prefab doesn't work, try upgrading. Projector is broken in Unity 5.3.
Caustic textures generated with Caustics Generator (free)
---------------------------- INSTRUCTIONS ------------------------------
1. Import Unity assets.
import "Environment" and "Effects"
2. Import custom assets. (see links below)
import "Caustics.shader" projection shader.
import "ProjectorCaustics.js" animation script into Scripts folder.
3. Create caustic textures.
import textures.
4. Add water to scene.
drag "WaterAdvanced" prefab (or whatever fx you prefer) into scene.
adjust scale and setting to your liking.
5. Add projector to scene.
Orthographic enabled.
make sure projector's settings are large enough to cover the scene.
set Ignore Layers to "Water".
create new Material, assign its Shader to "Projector/Caustics".
set the Projector's Material to the one you just created.
adjust Material properties to fit your scene.
6. Attached "ProjectorCasustics" animation script to the projector.
drag the caustic textures onto the "Caustic Textures" variable on the script.
save your scene and press Play to see the effect.
