Can you make money by creating and selling websites? Yes, it's even possible to earn enough to make a living. In this video, I'll explain how you can reach customers you can create and sell to, and how I did.

I started by spreading the word to everyone around me. Of course, I was a university student at the time. I posted my website creation ad on Facebook and in email groups. Even though people who knew I was doing this didn't respond that day, they contacted me later, and they still continue to do so.

As I continued this, I started reaching out to companies and telling them about my website creation. One day, after school, I walked past a large cafe, took the courage, and said, "I can create your website and manage your Facebook account." That day, I got the job and started increasing my allowance :)

Of course, since it wasn't possible to go into every shop and sell, I started making phone calls. On a piece of paper, and then in an Excel file, I jotted down the phone numbers, locations, and business types of businesses near me, and called them one by one. Almost every 45-50 calls said they were interested in having a website built. We were able to work with about a quarter of those who said so. So, any way you look at it, about one in 200 calls turned into a real job.

In the beginning, making 200 calls a week and getting one job worked out pretty well in the short term, as it equated to one new job per week. Of course, the clients I reached through cold sales actually wanted to work at really low prices. So, if you're doing something for 500 TL or so today, you can only sell it. You'll only be able to pay your bills with 2,000 TL a month, but it's worth it :)

Of course, trying to get business by phone was quite tedious and time-consuming. And it wasn't very profitable. That being said, consider that a MacBook Pro was 2,850 TL new at the time.

So, I started going to larger companies. After all, I was a little more comfortable now that I had samples of work, references, and a portfolio I could show them—call it what you will—began to form.

Because I had mostly worked with tradespeople in cafes, restaurants, and appliance sales and repairs until then, it took me a while to understand the mindset of corporate companies.

Corporations, like tradespeople, want the best work for the least budget, and there's a lot of competition. Although it wasn't what I'd hoped for, I started getting higher budgets than before and working more in return. Clients would ask me for a website, and I'd give them small gifts in addition to what they requested. For example, I built a website and set up email accounts for one startup, and I even registered another on Google Maps. Giving them small gifts like these must have made them very happy, because I continue to work with many of them today.

Over time, these companies became my most valuable tool for finding new clients.

A satisfied client is very likely to recommend you to others. Since I transitioned from working with tradespeople to working with corporate companies, I've strived to maintain a strong and ongoing relationship with my clients.

The interaction on the websites and social media accounts of my clients, who continued to work with me, must have caught the attention of "bosses" or people at other companies, because the number of people who came to me after receiving recommendations or seeing them on their websites began to increase. In fact, I must say that my company doesn't sell anything today; it only works with referrals.

Achieving this wasn't easy. It took about eight years, from telling friends to founding a company. Throughout this time, I've connected with clients one-on-one, trying to explain and address their needs before they even realized it. This is how I now make my living developing websites, social media platforms, and custom software.

This doesn't mean I haven't lost clients. On the contrary, I've lost as many clients as I've gained. However, instead of getting angry and tripping over the clients I lost, I tried to understand why they stopped working with me. It's easier said than done, but I recommend approaching your business from a purely business perspective rather than building an emotional connection with them. This way, you can continue to think rationally after the customer leaves.
