Montreal Alouettes stop Saskatchewan Roughriders on 3rd down in last minute to clinch comeback win
Saskatchewan WR Mitch Picton caught the ball but he had stepped out of bounds and then came back into the field of play, which made him ineligible to catch the ball. The catch would have been sufficient for a 1st down. After a review by the command centre, referee Tom Vallesi said the pass was incomplete, so the Alouettes took over on downs and ran out the clock for a 20-16 win. If anyone reads these descriptions, since the catch was actually made in bounds, wouldn't the penalty for illegal participation require replaying 3rd down instead of just giving the ball to the Alouettes? Or is there a different rule if it happens on 3rd down? Does anybody know?
