In Chapter 2 of A Plague Tale: Innocence, titled "The Strangers," Amicia and her young brother, Hugo, are on the run and seek refuge in a nearby village, hoping to find the doctor Laurentius. They arrive as outsiders, immediately noticing the villagers' fear and hostility, as many houses are marked with white X's, signifying the presence of the plague. The villagers refuse to help the siblings, hiding in their homes, leaving Amicia and Hugo alone and vulnerable to the Inquisition searching for them. Amicia and Hugo are forced to navigate the town while avoiding both the suspicious villagers and Inquisition soldiers. The siblings are eventually helped by a woman named Clervie, who provides them with a place to hide and clothes to change into to avoid detection.
Due to the extreme danger, Amicia is forced to take a life to protect herself and her brother, marking a significant, traumatic shift in her character from innocence to survival.
