Outbound marketing is about identifying the perfect customer and telling them about your product on whatever platform they use. That’s why it’s also called “push” marketing. You push the product onto the customer. You interrupt whatever they’re doing, like scrolling through their Facebook feed, to show them ads. Outbound marketing is interruptive. It interrupts whatever people are doing to tell them about your product. This type of marketing is popular with eCommerce businesses.
Inbound marketing is about making it easy for potential customers to find you. It uses SEO and content strategies that make your business easy to find on Google or pop on social media. That’s why it’s also called “pull” marketing. It pulls customers towards you. Instead of interruptive advertising, it uses advertising that’s triggered by ✨ purchase intent ✨. Inbound marketing is popular in the B2B space and no-touch business models.
Let me give you an example to understand better.
Let’s say you’re selling gym shoes. In outbound marketing, you would drive traffic to your store with social media ads. A typical outbound ad would be an Instagram ad targeted at men between 25 and 45 who go to the gym. This ad would pop up when they’re scrolling through their feed splayed on the couch like a cat with 7 chins.
In inbound marketing, you would write blog articles about issues customers might google. Like “What running shoes are best for flat feet?” or “Things you need to know before your first marathon”. If you use SEO techniques or buy google ads, your article can be the first thing that pops up. You can also post these articles on social media and pay for a little boost to make sure your followers see them.
Most companies use a mix of inbound and outbound techniques, but the reason you’ve been hearing about inbound is because inbound leads are just better. Inbound leads are 80% more likely to convert. Because of ✨ purchase intent ✨. People who google “buy pink gym shoes size 46 waterproof” are more likely to buy from you than people who see your ad in between two pictures of avocado toast on Instagram.
However, there are disadvantages to inbound marketing. The major disadvantage of inbound marketing is that it’s hard to scale. Meaning that if this works and your business grows, you can’t just throw more money into marketing like you can with outbound.
Scaling inbound marketing means scaling your marketing team. More writers, more SEO experts, Google Ad managers and then some more writers. Outbound marketing can be scaled by upping your budget, but inbound is content-driven and depends on content creators.
So to sum it up:
Inbound Marketing is helping potential customers find you. Its goal is to make sure those who are looking can find you easily. It also requires a large team to scale.
“Pull” marketing
Content-driven
Reactive
Outbound Marketing is identifying potential customers and telling them about you. Its goal is to identify a target demographic and get on their radar. It also requires a large budget to scale.
“Push” marketing
Advertising driven
Interruptive
