"There are so many ways that one can choose to help in the world, and you have to start somewhere."
Growing up in Seattle, Carrie would count tadpoles in the waters near her home. Now she never sees them there. “What changed?” she wondered.
As she began to research the topic, she heard Woodland Park Zoo’s call for community scientists. Carrie now volunteers with the zoo and fellow community members to observe amphibians. She wades into the waters at Pritchard Wetlands in Rainier Beach in search of frogs, toads, salamanders and their egg masses. When she spots evidence of amphibians, it is a sign that the waters are healthy. Their absence could mean the habitat and wildlife are under threat.
Together, the volunteers log hundreds of observations each year. The picture of where amphibians are—and are not—has become a conservation map for action in the Living Northwest.
