Considered one of the best players in the history of Soviet football, many sports journalists compared him to Pelé. He was known for his brilliant technique and was one of the first to perfect the backheel pass. However, his career was ruined before the start of the 1958 World Cup, when he was arrested on charges of raping a 20-year-old woman. Streltsov was found guilty and sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was released five years later and continued playing for Torpedo, but he no longer shone as brightly as he had in his earlier years, and he retired in 1970.
