a barista's full tutorial on how to make a smooth, café-style matcha latte at home. This matcha tutorial covers tools, recipe, and tips for your perfect cup
things you’ll need:
• matcha powder
• bamboo whisk (chasen)
• hot water (~160–170°F)
• syrup or sweetener of choice
• milk of choice
• scale (optional)
• your favorite cup
• measuring spoons
i’ll link where i got all my tools + ingredients below ↓
—
step 1: prep your whisk 🌀
soak your bamboo whisk in hot water for at least 1 minute.
this softens the bristles so they’re easier to whisk with + helps prevent breakage.
—
step 2: prep your matcha base 🍃
start with a good quality matcha:
→ bright green color
→ fine powdery texture
→ fresh, grassy aroma
sift your matcha to remove clumps. slowly pour in your hot water (not boiling!).
combine gently, then whisk in a zig-zag or ‘M’ motion for about 1 minute.
tip: lift your whisk slightly and whisk just the surface for a microfoam finish—creamy & light.
—
step 3: build your latte 💧
pour in your ice, sweetener, and milk.
top it off with your fluffy matcha.
✨ depending on my mood, i sometimes add a sweet cream on top for extra cozy vibes.
—
my favorite ratios (right now):
mini matcha:
• 2g matcha powder
• ~20g hot water
• ~70g milk
• ~5–10g syrup
• tiny pinch of salt
regular matcha:
• 4g matcha powder
• ~40g hot water
• ~140g milk
• ~10–15g syrup
• tiny pinch of salt
🧂 play with the ratios depending on the matcha, syrup, or milk you're using — each has its own sweetness & flavor profile.
