Maria Daines ~ Blackbirds In The Churchyard
In January I was walking past the village church in Horseheath, Cambridgeshire where some of my ancestors are buried. The sky was so blue, and I leant on the old wooden gate and just took in the beauty of the scene. I started writing these lyrics but didn't finish them until Paul played this wonderful melody a few days ago, now the song is complete and we hope you like it. Wild roses growing round your name

Last warmth from a distant fire
Almost home, caught in the crossfire
Hymn and tribute, life's regard
Time fades the reach of restless stars
Blown away, your little house of cards
Blackbirds in the churchyard
Left way before us, now we wait
Just behind that old wind ravaged gate
Knowing we will be here one and all
Come the final roll call
Old piano tuned to goodbye songs
Ark of salvation, this sad congregation
Knew you well and for so long, this rapt ovation
Keeps your memory strong
Life and times, you lived it all so fast
It's sad to see your old friends fall apart
Cast in stone forever, crumbling in the weather
Looking for a jewel in a junkyard
The trees listen hard and hear your voice
In the golden wind of summer where the kite flies
Still, in the silence, every son
Every mother, every daughter, all our wild ones
Come, with the flowers of the fields
As the corn is hewn for winter so life bows and yields
Clutching at the feathers of the heart
These tribulations raise old flags
And we depart
It's late and the moon will stand on guard
All the joy remembered
