Why does my dog urinate on soft surfaces inside the house? Why does she sometimes go potty both inside and outside? How can I teach my dog that going potty outside is good and going potty inside is bad? How can I remove the smell of dog urine from carpets and beds? Why does my dog go potty in the wrong place? You'll find the answers to these and other questions in this video.
Checklist for the owner: "How to potty train a puppy outside"
1. Take your puppy to the same area to go potty. Over time, your puppy will begin to associate this place with going potty.
2. Outside, repeat a reminder word or short phrase to your puppy that he associates with going potty (e.g., "go potty"). Repeat this until your puppy eliminates outside, especially if he's constantly distracted. This reminds your puppy why you went outside.
3. Enthusiastically reward your puppy with treats for going potty outside. This way, your puppy learns the new rules that going potty outside is a good thing.
4. Each walk should last at least 15 minutes. Remember that your puppy needs time to relax its muscles and completely empty its bowels and bladder.
5. Walking and playing with your puppy should only happen AFTER it has gone potty.
6. Take your puppy outside as often as possible. Start with walks every 2-3 hours, gradually increasing the time between walks.
7. Develop an evening routine for your puppy to reduce the likelihood of going potty at night while your owners are sleeping. Feed your puppy dinner approximately two hours before bedtime. Take your puppy outside 15-20 minutes after eating and 20-30 minutes before bedtime. Active play a few hours before bedtime also helps your puppy sleep better at night and stay awake.
8. In an apartment, limit your puppy's space to one room so you can closely monitor your dog and promptly correct it if it needs to go potty indoors.
8. Use a urine odor neutralizer if your puppy does make a "mistake" in the apartment. Remember that regular cleaning products only mask the smell to humans, but a dog's sensitive nose will still detect residual urine odor, which will trigger it to go potty indoors again.
9. Respond appropriately to your dog's "mistakes" in the apartment (more on this in the video "How to Train a Puppy to Use a Pad" - • Как БЫСТРЕЕ приучить щенка к пеленке ).
10. When leaving a small puppy alone for a long time, leave a pad for it (preferably in a crate, if available). Be realistic about how long your puppy can tolerate toilet training.
