It's really important to keep this in mind whenever you're starting a cutting phase, or there's a much higher chance you'll just end up getting discouraged and falling off track. When you drop into a deficit, you're probably going to look worse before you start to look better. That's because as your calories decrease, you're going to lose some of the muscle fullness you had during your bulk.

At the same time, even though you're getting leaner, your overall body fat level will probably still be too high for that muscle definition to show through yet. So for a certain period, you'll kind of just look like a smaller, softer version of your previous self. A lot of people panic when they see that because they assume it means they're losing a bunch of muscle, when that's really not the case.

As long as you're continuing to lift heavy and intensely and you're eating enough protein, you probably haven't lost any actual muscle at all. That decrease in overall size is just a matter of carrying less glycogen, water weight, and a bit less fat. You have to trust the process and keep going because eventually you'll cross over to the other side where the cuts become clearly visible. From there, you'll just look better and better every week. And once you hit your desired leanness, you can bump your calories back up again and regain that fullness.
