Eok-soe, a wandering bachelor traveling the eight provinces during the late Joseon Dynasty, settles down as a servant at the home of Ahn Jin-sa, a powerful figure in a remote mountain village, and blossoms a pure love with Geum-soon.
Ahn Jin-sa, who has been unable to have children even after the age of 50, mistreats his young second wife, the Madam, and eventually extends his advances to Geum-soon, a serf.
The Madam, seeking solace from her loneliness every night, unintentionally ends up having an affair with Eok-soe. When this is discovered by Ahn Jin-sa, she takes her own life out of intense guilt.
Geum-soon, who had been resisting Ahn Jin-sa's temptations, eventually escapes with her beloved Eok-soe to find a new life, while Ahn Jin-sa, left in ruins by an unexpected accident, deeply regrets his wrongdoings.
