Armenian Muslims
Derbent in Dagestan is often called the "Caucasian Jerusalem," or the city of three religions. It was here that the spread of Islam in the North Caucasus began. It is home to the oldest functioning synagogue in Russia, built in 1614, as well as a 19th-century Orthodox church. People of various faiths equally revere all of Derbent's religious shrines.
One such place is the sacred Muslim cemetery of Kirkhlyar, where 40 companions of the Prophet Muhammad are buried, bringing a new faith here almost 1,500 years ago. Pilgrims and tourists from all over the world come here.
