As new web developers, it can be an exciting time. With so many technologies to learn, we feel like we are in our element. But what if our goal is to make money from web development? What if we want to eventually sell our services as web developers? For many, and probably most web developers, this is the end goal. To make a living from the thing we enjoy doing.
The problem with this is that for most of us, what we love, is the technology side of web development. We love learning new languages. We love working with different frameworks and software. And we love learning about all of these things. Because of this, it is easy to justify spending time learning new things rather than actually putting ourselves out there and selling our services.
This constant learning of new new technologies and languages is a form of procrastination. And for many of, we do this out of fear. We do this because it is easier, and more enjoyable to learn a new programming language than it is to market ourselves and talk to prospective clients.
The hard truth of the matter is that the most important skill we should be focussing on is not javascript, it is not php, it is not python. It is marketing and sales. If your goal is to make money from your web development services. You will be more financially successful if you are good at marketing and average at web development, than if you are average at marketing and good at web development. This is the unfortunate truth. But once you realise this, and get over your fear of putting yourself out there. The opportunities are great...
