How to Control Distance on Long Putts with Brad Faxon | Golf Tips | Titleist
From 60 feet, tour players three-putt more than they two-putt. Only about 2% of putts from that distance go in. Even though the realistic goal is to 2-putt, Brad Faxon prefers an approach where every ball you putt has a chance to go in.
Brad Faxon doesn't call it lag putting. Never liked the term. Lag implies you're just trying to get it close, almost like you're afraid of the putt. He'd rather talk about touch, feel and distance control - and that small shift in thinking changes how you approach these putts entirely.
The process starts with reading the putt in two halves. Find the midpoint, understand what the ball is doing uphill versus downhill and pick an intermediate target closer to you that you can actually focus on. Uphill is easier to control than downhill - once the ball starts slowing down on the back half, that's when the break takes over.
Center contact on the putter face matters more from distance than anywhere else on the green. A good setup is what makes that repeatable.
