What is a vertebral hemangioma?
A vertebral hemangioma (also known as a cavernous hemangioma or hemangiomatous angioma) is usually detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT).
Hemangiomas are the most common benign tumor of the spine (10-12% of all spinal tumors).
Hemangiomas rarely cause any health problems (only 1.2% of hemangiomas are symptomatic), so in most cases, hemangiomas are discovered incidentally on CT or MRI. Most often, there is one hemangioma on the spine, although sometimes there may be several.
If I have a hemangioma, do I need regular checkups?
No, hemangiomas are benign growths, and since they do not grow, regular monitoring is usually not required.
MRI or CT scans are only necessary if new, unexpected symptoms arise.
How do I know if a hemangioma is the cause of my complaint (pain)?
Since the causes of back pain are numerous and complex, a consultation with a neurosurgeon is necessary to determine whether a hemangioma is the cause of your complaint.
What are the possible symptoms of hemangiomas?
As mentioned earlier, hemangiomas rarely cause any symptoms, but sometimes symptoms may include:
pain;
vertebral fractures (a hemangioma can weaken a vertebra mechanically, making fractures more common in these vertebrae);
Neurological deficit (neurological disorders) – if the hemangioma develops close to the spinal canal or intervertebral foramen and causes damage to neurological structures.

Verbal hemangioma. What are the main treatment options for hemangiomas? A specialist will help determine the best treatment method for each individual case. Generally, the following methods are available for treating spinal hemangiomas:
Vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty are methods that differ in their technical nuances, but the essence involves filling the hemangioma with medical cement through a needle inserted through the vertebral arch under X-ray guidance;
Radiation therapy or local irradiation of the pathological lesion, which leads to the gradual formation of connective tissue in the hemangioma and its closure. After irradiation, pain disappears over a long period of time (from several months to several years);
Embolization – "sealing" the hemangioma with a special medical "glue" that is injected through the delivery vessel, if a vessel feeding the hemangioma is identified;
Surgical excision – for symptomatic hemangiomas that cannot be treated with the above methods.
