After purchasing the car, it was time to get license plates. I made an appointment with the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate (STSI) through the State Services website. I paid the 2,000-ruble fee for the plates and 500 rubles for the registration. I arrived at the STSI at the appointed time, received a ticket, submitted my documents to the inspector, had the license plate units verified, and 40 minutes later I had my new plates. Of course, you always want fancy plates—888, 777, or similar—but luck is a fickle thing. As a last resort, I wanted mirror-image plates... Unfortunately, this time, and many other times, luck wasn't on my side. I received plates that would be hard to even remember without the vehicle registration certificate.
After purchasing the car, the dealership installed rectangular plastic license plate frames as a gift. Chinese cars have a completely different license plate mount, and the plates in China are square, while the ones in Russia are rectangular.
One of the drawbacks of the dealer's license plate frame was that when closing the trunk, since it's rectangular and only secured at two points instead of four, it would make an extraneous noise and rattle. When driving over bumps, the frame would also make extraneous noises. This is very unpleasant and makes it feel like a new car is hauling a bucket of bolts and nuts.
There are two options for solving the license plate mounting problem and eliminating the extraneous noise:
1) Make a square license plate
2) Purchase special adapters and silicone license plate frames.
I chose the second option. I've been using silicone license plate frames and adapters for a long time now. I really like the second option. The car gets a stylish silicone frame in various colors, without any advertising from the dealer. I have no doubts about the quality and reliability of the mounting. I've used this method on many cars.
