This is the daily class at the Meibukan Dojo in Nara, Okinawa. This eight year old girl is performing the Goju ryu kata, Saifa. How can children in Japan be so focused and disciplined compared to children in other countries who would be running around causing mayhem?
In Japan this starts at home where ‘shitsuke’ (training or upbringing) is the culture of raising children with discipline to respect parents and teachers and thereby avoid unpleasant scenes in public. We once asked a mother why she brought her six year old to the local karate class? in this case the JKS Honbu dojo with sensei Masao Kagawa no less!! She told us that the strong discipline and training by the sensei was needed because she loved her child too much and was scared she was not stern enough at home.
