In the Caucasus, there are many reasons why some girls are prevented from dancing, especially if they are married.

Dagestan is a republic where Islam has increasingly played a role over the years. This adds a local flavor to many things common in other regions, including ballet. Choreographer Musa Ozdoyev not only creates stunning productions but also intelligently explains to others why ballet is normal. However, he still has trouble getting dancers to wear tights, and not all performers can afford close contact on stage.

What is and isn't allowed to dance in the Caucasus, what the dancers themselves think about it, and what a ballet about Imam Shamil looks like—all in Vladimir Sevrinovsky's new film.
