Sermon by Christian Schwark on Exodus 18:13-27, delivered on February 23, 2025, at the Evangelical Church of the Resurrection in Siegen-Trupbach. Part 3 of the sermon series: “Life in the Desert.”

Sermon topic: “What if I am overwhelmed?”

Sermon Text:

“The Appointment of Helpers for Moses

13 The next morning Moses sat down to administer justice to the people. And the people stood around Moses from morning till evening. 14 When his father-in-law saw all that he was doing to the people, he said, “What are you doing to the people? Why do you sit there alone, with all the people standing around you from morning till evening?” 15 Moses answered him, “The people come to me to inquire of God. 16 For when they have a dispute, they come to me so that I may judge between them and make known to them the statutes of God and his instructions.” 17 His father-in-law said to him, “It is not right that you are doing this. 18 You are wearing yourself out, and so are the people who are with you. The task is too heavy for you; you cannot accomplish it alone. 19 But listen to my voice; I will advise you, and God will be with you. If you take up the cause of the people, then you will be the one who is ... Bring the people before God and present their concerns before God. 20 Make known to them the statutes and instructions, that you may teach them the way in which they should walk and the works they should do. 21 But look among all the people for upright men who fear God, who are truthful and enemies of unrighteous gain. Appoint them as leaders over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, 22 so that they may judge the people at all times. Only when it is a major matter should they bring it before you, but all the minor matters they should decide themselves. This will make it easier for you and let them bear it with you. 23 If you do this, you will be able to accomplish what God commands you, and this whole people will be able to go to their place in peace. 24 Moses obeyed the word of his father-in-law and did everything he said. 25 He chose upright men from all Israel and made them leaders over the people, as rulers over Thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, 26 so that they might judge the people at any time, bringing the more serious cases before Moses and judging the minor cases themselves. 27 And Moses let his father-in-law return to his own land.”
