The Papashvili brothers, arriving at the airport where one of them had to fly to Israel for his wife's sake, wanted to drink champagne. They wanted it, but it wasn't sold in the USSR, so Merab crossed the border using his brother's passport and bought a bottle. But he wasn't allowed back. So it wasn't Yakov, the children's choirmaster, who flew to Israel, but Merab, his brother, a taxi driver who looked just like him. This sad comedy tells the story of his ordeals and adventures, which defy all imagination. Jews mistake him for a KGB agent, Soviet trade mission officials think he's a provocateur, and he's officially unable to return home.
