Although you can spend $50.00, $100, $150 or even $800 or more for commercially available video editing software that may very well be out of your budget or just simply unnecessary for your current needs. Well you are in luck because there are free programs available for you to use! Unfortunately free solutions often offer limited features and function, but you may not even miss many of those features.
In this video we will be taking a look at one free program by the name of Handbrake. Handbrake is a fairly popular and useful tool for ripping DVDs, encoding video, as well as optimized video for streaming on the web such as with YouTube. By encoding your video to enable it to stream better this will help reduce the processing time YouTube needs after your video has been uploaded before it becomes available. This also helps make sure that the video YouTube makes available to the public in your YouTube channel is encoded well for proper streaming. Remember that a big part of user experience is how quickly something loads. When a video is not encoded well for streaming it tends to produce a slow, choppy play back, especially for very large, high quality, high resolution videos being video with slower internet connections. This in turn tends to reduce the average time spent on page, or more specifically the average amount of time your video is watched, which can positively or negatively affect your video’s rankings. Higher average time watched is generally preferred as this is an indicator that people are interested in your video content, and as such makes YouTube more likely to offer it to the next viewer who may be entering a relevant search query.

0:00 Hi I'm Dan Camarda. Welcome to True Blue Market View. In this video we are going to be talking about how you can re-encode your videos and even optimize them for streaming applications such as upload and streaming on your YouTube channel.
0:13 "Handbrake". Download, install, and open Handbrake now.
1:07 With Hanbdrake open we're gonna first want to open our source file.
Set the destination file path for your output file that you'll be creating with Handbrake.
Next be sure that you choose the high-profile on the right-hand side of the screen.
Be sure that your container is an mp4.
Put a check in the box for web optimized.
Also put a check in the box for iPod 5g support.
On the video tab make sure your video codec is H 264 / x264.
Your frame rate should be the same as source.
2:20 And the quality you should choose average bitrate: in order to determine what a good average bitrate would be you're gonna want to find out what the bitrate of your source file is.
3:27 Under optimize video you're gonna want to choose use advanced tad instead. Now we're going to go to the Audio tab.
On the Audio tab use the codec AAC and usually a bit rate of about 128 is more than sufficient and the mixdown should be stereo.
Next to go to the Advanced tab. On the Advanced tab probably the most important thing is that you set the maximum B frames to two (2).
4:07 I'll typically use the settings that you see on screen here when I'm using Handbrake to re-encode video.
Once all your settings have been set click the start button to re-encode your video. Preview the video that you've created using a media players such as VLC media player which is available for free also available through SourceForge.net and once you see that you have a video that is of acceptable quality you can simply choose add within Handbrake, set a preset name, whatever options you may want, add a description if you wish and then
click Add.
Having said that H264 or the open source format x264 is very popular and is generally preferred these days.
This video codec works well with the mp4 file type or container this is also why I suggest you use Handbrake and to re-render your file into the mp4 container using the H264 video codec.
