Hello, friends!
This is a quick speed drawing demonstration of a pencil sketch on toned paper with chalk accents. You can see hours of realistic drawing unfold in about 100 seconds in all of its stages.
First, the block-in, with long, sweeping lines describing the major outlines of the face, hair, neck and shoulders.
Next, establishing the placement and sizes of features checking distances and comparing heights and widths.
Once major shapes are anchored in place, values can be established, starting with the darkest shadows and elements such as the hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, pupils, and lips.
Further reinforcement of these values leads to keying the drawing, putting in midtones and areas where major three-dimensional forms need to be indicated, such as the bridge of the nose, and more subtle muscle around the eyes and mouth.
This is a gradual process of building up while continuing to pay attention to keying and beginning to think about turning the form from shadow, into midtone, and then into light.
Since this is toned paper, it really helps to establish the midtone for the skin and light elements such as the whites of the eyes and highlights on the form become much more pronounced when layered in with white chalk.
Patience is key in pushing with the pencil and pulling with the eraser.
Once the major forms are looking solid and the values are dialed in, pick out individual details to further enhance the depth and living quality of the likeness.
To soften the overall appearance, a dry brush can be used to blend in broad, soft sweeps.
