Cities around the world are expanding rapidly, but how can we measure this growth objectively?

In this video, we use satellite imagery from the Landsat program and analyze it in Google Earth Engine to detect urban expansion between 1990 and 2024. By applying the Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI), we can identify built-up areas and visualize how urban regions have grown over time.

This simple geospatial workflow demonstrates how satellite data and cloud-based platforms can help us understand urbanization patterns and support sustainable planning.

Tools used: Google Earth Engine
Data source: Landsat satellite imagery
