What happens when heroes aren’t chosen by destiny—but by survival?
In this episode of Alone in the Dork, we take a five-minute dork dive into one of my favorite old-school RPG traditions: the 0-level funnel. Popularized by Dungeon Crawl Classics, funnels throw players into deadly adventures as ordinary peasants—farmers, rat catchers, ditch diggers—armed with little more than a hat, a chicken, and terrible odds.
Most characters won’t survive.
That’s the point.
Instead of backstories and optimization, funnels let characters emerge through play. Heroes aren’t built—they’re discovered. Along the way, players learn creative problem-solving, risk management, and how failure can be just as fun as success.
In this video, we cover:
What a 0-level funnel is and where it came from
Why funnels are perfect for new and veteran players
How resource management replaces optimization
Tips for running funnels at the table
Why surviving a funnel feels so freakin' good
Whether you’re new to OSR games or a long-time DCC fan, this is why funnels continue to endure.
