I was asked to take on the task of making the ashes for Ash Wednesday.
For me a big honor.
Used a big metal pail to contain the ashes and sifted through a metal strainer.
several surprises.
Hot. Spritual. Different.
tips:
1. burn the palms in small handfuls
(not like i did, which was too hot)
2. be ready to add water.
(WE used snowballs to cool it...)
3. read up on how other people make charcoal .
4. roll with the punches. it don't work exactly as planned.
5. sift the ashes through a metal sieve with a metal spoon to get tiny clean ashes.
6. store in a metal can or glass jar on a non flammable surface for couple days to make sure the fire is out and you don't burn your house down.
7. spritz with a little oliver oil (while grinding through the sieve)
8. relax. a little goes a long way.
