In this lesson, we will share a few tips and see examples of assigning colors to texts, icons, backgrounds, and even photos, to better tell your story.
We’re going to learn how to assign each color from the color scheme we have.
To start this session, you need to have your color scheme ready. If you don’t have a color scheme yet, you can revisit our previous session about Creating a Color Scheme.
Before we begin, we need to know what we are going to assign those colors to.
If you are about to divide your visual into two separate layers, we have elements in the background and foreground.
Background elements are those you place in the back, such as the background color, photos, and background patterns.
Foreground elements are the front-facing elements such as texts, photos, charts, and icons.
And the easy rule is, the background colors and the foreground colors have to be highly contrasting against each other.

To get highly contrasting colors, you can combine the colors on opposite sides of the spectrum; the more gap they have in between, the higher the contrast. White and black has the highest contrast, followed by tint and shade. Tint has low contrast against hue colors; the same goes for tone colors against shade colors.
How many colors should we assign to both background and foreground?
For the background, you will need a minimal number of colors so that you can use more colors to go for the foreground elements.
The foreground colors can be further sub-categorized into primary and secondary colors. The primary color will be used for your text, icons, and other assets in general. In contrast, the secondary color will act as an accent color for decorative elements or highlight specific information.
