"Sweet Home Alabama" is a song by American Rock Band Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was written in response to Neil Youngs 1970 song "Southern Man" which the band felt blame for the South and American Slavery. "Sweet Home Alabama" reached #8 on the charts in 1974 and become the band's highest charted single The plane was 30 years old and this was the last trip. They were to pick up a Lear Jet when they got to Baton Rouge
In 1977 Lynyrd Skynyrd was killed in a plane crash in Gillsburg Mississippi. He was his way from Greenville SC to Baton Rouge LA when they crashed in a farmers corn field
Carolyn and I visited the crash sight and the memorial which is located off of route 55 and I think milelmarker 8. If you are in the area check it out. Very impressive. Check the website "Lynyrd Skynyred Monument Inc" for additional information
