HowTo: PDF page count; command line method
Learn Linux command line method to find the total number of pages in a PDF file or the total PDF page count. A step-by-step explanation is given below.
Step 1: pdfinfo command line utility reads the PDF file and prints out PDF document metadata, which includes details like the Title, Author, Creator, and a line that says "Pages: [Number]".
Step 2: The pipe sends the entire block of metadata directly into the next command.
Step 3: Use AWK scripting language to scan metadata for line starting with the word "Pages:". When it finds that line, it splits it into columns and prints the second column, which gives the actual number of pages in the PDF file.
