It is one of the largest and famous in Russia monasteries with centuries of history. The name of the monastery is associated with the caves in it (in Old Russian - pechory), called "God created" (that is, created by God). In 1473, the cave church of the Assumption of the Mother of God was consecrated here, excavated by the Monk Iona in a sandstone hill. This year is considered the year of the foundation of the monastery. The hill in which the Assumption Church is located and God's built caves is called the Holy Mountain.
The monastery has never closed in its history. In the interwar period (from February 1920 to January 1945) was within Estonia, due to which was not affected by anti-church and anti-religious measures of the Soviet government.
