I’m not interested in portraying all phd supervisors as villains. Many are thoughtful mentors who genuinely care about their students. But toxic academia exists, and pretending it doesn’t only protects the people who benefit from it. When a toxic phd supervisor is involved, the damage often goes far beyond missed deadlines or awkward meetings. It can affect mental health, identity, and a student’s belief in their own abilities.

In this video, I unpack the PhD supervisor relationship as a professional relationship with real power imbalances. That means learning to notice when words and actions don’t align, when praise is used strategically, or when control replaces mentorship.
