Manx Electric Railway - Parallel Run: No.1 & No.34 - 27/07/23
The Manx Electric Railway celebrates 130 years of operation this year, having opened between Derby Castle and Groudle Glen in 1893. During the Isle of Man's Transport Festival, the MER operated a wide range of vehicles in the railway's fleet, showcasing the line's 130 year history. A parallel run between Derby Castle and Groudle Glen was performed on 27th July, featuring the oldest and newest members of the MER fleet.
Saloon Car No.1 was built in 1893 by G.F. Milnes, dating back to the line's opening. She holds the record for the oldest operational tramcar in the world, and carries her original 1893 livery of the Douglas & Laxey Coast Electric Tramway.
Departmental Diesel Works Car No.34 was built in 1995, originally built as a replica of Snaefell Car No.7 ‘Maria’. In 2003, she was selected by the MER to be rebuilt as a dedicated Works Car, and was subsequently fitted with a diesel engine, entering service on the MER in 2006. Despite her short history, she is the only item of rolling stock to have operated on all four Manx Government-owned railways, having also visited the IOM Steam Railway in 2010, and aided in the rebuilding of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway in 2019.
