Today, Ubuntu Linux (or simply Ubuntu) is one of the most popular, prominent and influential Linux distributions (or simply "distros") that is out there, while also being a base for many other distros, such as Linux Mint, Feren OS and Zorin OS. But how did it get its start? Well, today's video focuses on Ubuntu 4.10, the first version of Ubuntu Linux.

With the recent celebrations of both US Independence Day and Canada Day, I wanted to make a video about free-and-open-source software, and what's not better than a video on a Linux distro?

Anyways, Ubuntu Linux was created in 2004 over a six month time span that started through a meeting between Mark Shuttleworth and a number of people in London. It has a six-month release schedule (new releases arrive in April and October, with 6.06 as an outlier). A beta build from September exists online, however that is not the focus of today's video. It is based off of Debian Linux, but has a variety of things that set it apart. Over the years, the company behind Ubuntu, Canonical Ltd., has added and experimented with different components, such as the Snap application system and the Unity desktop environment. As of 2025 July, it ranks eighth among over 200 Linux distros on DistroWatch, a website which ranks Linux distro popularity through website hits.

I hope you enjoy this video.

This is probably the first version of these timestamps:
0:00 - Introduction
0:23 - Background
1:09 - Installation
1:42 - Logging In
2:09 - The desktop and software
7:41 - Conclusion
