This large bronze coin weighing over 25 grams depicting Emperor Marcus Aurelius was issued from 161-180 AD. The reverse shows the goddess Apollo on horseback, pedigreed from a 1981 auction. It’s been certified by NGC Ancients in About Uncirculated condition with a perfect 5/5 strike and surfaces, along with the coveted star for great eye appeal.
So why is this coin so rare?
The answer is that copper coins were primarily used by the common folk, and most of them were heavily circulated, worn, damaged, and corroded by environmental factors over the past 2K years. Because of these factors, it’s unusual to find coppers in such a remarkable state of preservation today. The few ancient Roman copper coins we have found records of have fetched tens of thousands of dollars when they come up for auction because of their immense rarity.
