You can’t even make up this stuff! I owe a follow up and summary to our request for help. The response we received was overwhelming and was one more experience that proves to me that the off road community is the greatest!
I’ll back up and explain the entire situation for context.
Myself, my son Josh and two good friends (Rich and Cory) were traveling from Utah in Rich’s Motorhome, to the Tecate Enduro. Some variation of our group has been coming to this historic race since 2010 so we’re familiar with the location, roads, and border crossing.
Rich’s Motorhome is a 45 foot Freightliner conversion completely custom built by him from the frame up, complete with a three bike dirt bike lift on the back and garage storage underneath for more bikes. Yes, we like dirt bikes 😜
Rich takes this Motorhome into Mexico at least once a year so we didn’t think anything about crossing.
We arrived at the Tecate border crossing Friday afternoon about 1:30. They would not allow us to cross saying we were too big (even though there was a separate truck crossing). They said we had to go to to the Otay crossing which was about an hour away back to the east. Frustrated, but determined, we went to Otay. After waiting in line for an hour, we ended up getting turned away again. The reasoning we were being told was because of size and the fact that it was a semi conversion even though it is a private coach. To top it off, Rich even has the rig registered as an RV in Mexico (a special tag for RV’s). They told us we would have to go to the San Ysidro crossing.
Really frustrated at this point we drove to San Ysidro and waited another hour in line (yes, we went to the far right lane for buses). When we arrived there, and after a half hour discussion with about 6 border officials, we were turned away once again. Keep in mind, both Josh and Cory are fluent in Spanish, nothing ever got heated, it was just frustrating because we could never really get a straight answer.
By this time it was about 6:30 pm, Rich was completely baked and ready to get some sleep and go to Sea World the next day and watch Dolphins with 8 year olds.
But, we’re a stubborn bunch. Did I mention we really like to ride and race our dirt bikes?
So we decided to go get some dinner. Once Rich had some Pho in him he was feeling better.
It was at this time that I put out my original plea on Facebook for some help. We also starting calling every rental agency we could think of to find a truck or van (but nobody allows their vehicles across the border). Keep in mind, the Tecate border crossing closes at 10:00 pm and doesn’t open until 6:00 am. The race started at 7:00 am the next morning, and gas cans had to be on the gas trailer at 6:00 am (and the race location is a solid 45 minutes or more from border crossing). Part 2 In Comments
