On paper, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood should be a game that I really enjoy. Not only was it developed by Western RPG juggernaut Bioware of all people, but because the franchise honestly lends itself really well to this style of game. More so than any other platformer, the Sonic series had always put an emphasis on the characters and world. While the quality of those stories varied, every new game put in the effort to expand what we knew about the franchise. Whether by introducing new characters to the cast or by trying to establish legitimate lore and mythology to build stories off of. This was apparent as early as some of the first sequels this franchise ever got. Frankly, it’s kind of weird that it took Sega as long as they did to greenlight a Sonic RPG. Not just because of their past experiences with the genre, but because Sonic’s rival Mario had already capitalized on this market for years. It only makes sense for Sega to do the same. So we have a series of games that has a ton of pre-existing characters and locations to work with and a seasoned RPG developer that’s already proven they can make the most out of this kind of stuff. This should’ve been a match made in heaven; a recipe for a sureshire hit that could potentially pave the way for a full spinoff series. The future was looking bright…. So what happened here?
Nowadays, whenever Sonic Chronicles is brought up, the topic of conversation tends to shift over to ex-comic book writer and artist Ken Penders and all the legal stuff surrounding him. Either that or the game’s 10/10 soundtrack (have a little snippet) or the absolutely insane sound design (big the cat vomit) There aren’t many people that talk about the game itself anymore. Most people tend to just acknowledge that it’s bad and move on with their lives but I want to offer a little bit more nuance to the discussion. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood fails in a lot of ways and is by no means a game that I would recommend fans of Sonic or RPGs, in general, to check out, but at the same time, I want to highlight the genuinely creative ideas on offer here and how with some work, they could be adapted in the modern day. Even if there aren’t as many as you might think.
Sonic Chronicles is Genuinely Awful. Sonic Chronicles the Dark Brotherhood is really bad. Some might even say that Sonic Chronicles is the worst Sonic the Hedgehog game. While I don't fully agree with that, Sonic Chronicles is Genuinely Awful and in this Sonic Chronicles Analysis, I'll be going into great detail as to why Sonic Chronicles Failed while also offering ways to fix Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. A Sonic the Hedgehog RPG has a lot of potential to be great, so it's a shame that they gave up after their first attempts. In this Sonic Chronicles Review, Sonic Chronicles Analysis, and Sonic Chronicles Critique, I'll be providing constructive ways to improve Sonic Chronicles while also acknowledging some of the legitimate good aspects of the game, even if there aren't many. While I won't be talking too much about Ken Penders and how he influenced the legacy of Sonic Chronicles, it is still worth mentioning. Sonic Chronicles is Genuinely Awful is the best Sonic Chronicles video you can find and one of the best Nam's Compendium videos. If you want more Sonic the Hedgehog videos, please show this one some love!
