Bring back the 1998 retro-digital aesthetic with this DIY Gameboy Camera built entirely on the ESP32-CAM platform for under $10!
In this episode, I walk you through the process of building a portable, handheld digital camera that captures grayscale, lo-fi images and saves them directly to a microSD card. We started with an ambitious plan to use a full-color ST7789 display, but after hitting several GPIO and SPI pin conflicts, we pivoted to a highly efficient $I^{2}C$ OLED setup. This change not only solved our hardware stability issues but also gave us that classic pixel-art look we were aiming for!

This build features a live preview mode, a physical shutter button, and a rechargeable LiPo battery system, all housed in a custom 3D-printed case designed in Fusion 360. Whether you are a beginner looking for your first ESP32 project or a pro looking to customize your own digital camera, this guide has everything you need to get started.
