SOFRINTSY AMBULANCE BRIGADE In Chechnya, the Sofrintsy brigade was constantly thrown into the thick of things. Grozny, Argun, Samashki, Bamut – the names of these towns and villages, converted into fortresses by militants, speak for themselves.
GRAD AND SHILAKA IN THE DEBUT
"Sofrintsy are seasoned men. A jack of all trades," I've heard this said more than once during the Chechen campaign...
"A jack of all trades?..." No, that's probably not quite right," says Colonel Vasily Tatsitov, a former deputy brigade commander who saw much combat. "In difficult situations, a commander has always relied on the units he had complete confidence in." So we were trusted with the most difficult operations because they knew the Sofrino people would lay down their lives, but they wouldn't let us down. In that war, there were only a few units and subunits that, like us, were called "first aid."
The Sofrino people's debut was memorable. Near Staropromyslovskoye Highway, they recaptured two Grad and Shilka launchers from fighters of Dudayev's special forces regiment, the Borz. In Novye Promysly, reconnaissance recovered two 122-mm mortars and then reached the base where Dudayev's men were repairing tanks. They had no engines, but the guns were in perfect working order. The enemy had hoped to use the damaged armor as pillboxes, but they didn't have time. In Argun, they captured two infantry fighting vehicles. Then, they were only half an hour late in catching the militants. At their headquarters, even the porridge on the stove had barely cooled.
But that was just the tip of the iceberg. I had to pick berries in Samashki, Achkhoy-Martan, and Bamut.
