Connection tracking is the process used to monitor the status of each network connection. It involves creating a table that stores information about each active connection, including the source, destination, port, protocol, and connection status. With connection tracking, the router can understand the context of each packet received, whether it is part of an existing connection or a new one.

Every packet passing through the router will be classified into three types, one of which is a new packet. To learn how to identify these new packets within the network, you can see how it works in this video.
