Why you Shouldn't Major in Computer Science :    • Why You Shouldn't Major in Computer Science

About 8 months ago I released my "Computer Science Major in 2020?" video, where I talked about different classes you might take if you studied computer science at UCSD, as well as the overall job outlook for a computer science major. I also touched a bit on my experience studying mathematics and computer science at UCSD. Since 2020 has finally come to close, I thought it would be useful to revisit those topics and see what has changed.

In terms of computer science major classes, not too much has changed, but the classes do vary based on the university you attend. My computer science major 2020 video discussed UCSD required courses for the computer science and engineering major. Whereas this video I go over the required classes for an undergraduate computer science major at Harvard (pretty spicy). It is important to note that since Harvard is on semester system and UCSD is on a quarter system, you end up taking fewer computer science classes at Harvard, but each class is longer in duration.

Next the overall average salary for computer science majors as well as their projected job outlook in the future still looks promising. Computer science majors have amongst the highest earning potentials out of college (alongside math and engineering majors). Now there are an absolute ton of careers that are open to computer science majors, but for simplicity I'll just use the software developer position. Software developers had an extremely high median salary in 2019 (according to BLS), and in 2020 still had a relatively high average salary (according to ziprecruiter). Additionally, BLS has projected that by 2021, there will be about 316,000 more software developer jobs (that's 22% growth over 10 years)! Overall, the computer science major still seems to be a financially sensible and a solid choice.

But finances aside, my experience with math and computer science has been filled with ups and downs. I graduated from UCSD this past June, but throughout my undergraduate education, I was constantly stressed, spending hours in the computer science lab, and attending tutoring hours. So there are definitely downsides to majoring in computer science.
Though looking back, I'd say the math computer science degree was definitely all worth it!
