New scheme announced for migrant fishers in Ireland - ITF's Michael O'Brien reacts
A scheme recently announced by the Irish government to regularise thousands of undocumented workers has been widely welcomed.
While some migrant fishers living in Ireland will now have clear path to becoming ‘documented’ and legally able to work in the Republic, many currently undocumented fishers (as well as fishers who were documented as part of the Atypical Work Permit Scheme) are excluded.
ITF Fisheries Campaign Lead for Ireland, Michael O’Brien, talks to Kildare FM Radio about the importance of Ireland getting the changes right before the official launch of the scheme in January.
Michael encourages the Irish government to make the new scheme as inclusive as possible, so that more migrant fishers and other migrant workers are offered a route out of gross exploitation.
