You run a speed test, it shows full speed… but YouTube still buffers. Why?
Let’s understand what speed tests actually measure—and what they don’t.
Internet speed tests look very simple — just click a button and you get Mbps.
But in reality, there is a well-designed process happening in the background to measure your download speed, upload speed, and latency.
Let’s understand this step by step from the basics.
Step 1: Understanding Speed with a Simple Example
Imagine two computers connected with a wire:
PC A ---------------------- PC B
PC A sends 500 Megabits (Mb) of data to PC B, and it takes 60 seconds to complete.
So, speed = Total data / Time taken
= 500 Mb / 60 sec
= 8.33 Mbps (Megabits per second)
This means every second, about 8.33 Megabits of data is transferred.
What Happens When You Click “Go”
When you start a speed test:
Your device contacts the speed test service (like Speedtest).
It gets a list of nearby servers.
It avoids far-away servers because more distance = more delay.
It selects the closest and low latency server.
Latency (Ping) Measurement
Before measuring speed, your device checks latency.
It sends small requests to multiple servers
Measures Round Trip Time (RTT)
This is similar to a ping test
Important:
It is not always pure ICMP ping
Many speed tests use HTTP or TCP-based requests instead
Latency depends on:
Distance
Network congestion
Router processing time
Higher latency can affect performance so it wont chose that server to perform speedtest.
Download Speed Test
Now the real test begins.
Your device opens multiple TCP connections to the server
Server starts sending real data
This is actual data transfer, not just testing connectivity
TCP Behavior (Why Speed Starts Slow)
TCP does not send data at full speed immediately.
It uses a method called slow start:
Starts with small amount of data
Gradually increases speed
Monitors acknowledgments (ACKs)
If network is stable → speed increases
If delay or packet loss → speed reduces
That’s why speed graph goes up gradually.
Measuring Download Speed
The server keeps sending data as fast as the network allows, and your device measures:
How much data is received
In how much time
Example:
If your device receives 500 Mb in 1 second,
then speed = 500 Mbps
Upload Speed Test
Now the process reverses:
Your device sends data to the server
Data is transferred continuously
TCP handles acknowledgments in parallel
Speed is calculated as:
Upload speed = Data sent / Time taken
Example:
300 Mb sent in 10 seconds
= 30 Mbps
Effect of Packet Loss and Congestion
If packets are lost:
Receiver asks for missing data
Data is retransmitted
Total time increases
Example:
300 Mb should take 10 seconds
But takes 15 seconds due to packet loss
New speed = 20 Mbps
So packet loss reduces speed.
Why Speed Test is Not Always Accurate?
Speed test measures your connection to a nearby server, not the entire internet.
So:
Good speed test result = Your ISP is performing well
Does not guarantee all websites will be fast
Slow downloads can happen due to:
Network congestion in the path
Issues in other ISP networks
Server-side limitations
