The Coda Brass Quintet performs Color, Fabric, Mood by Julienne K. Tsang live at the Newark Free Library on May 8th, 2024.
From the composer:
"Back in school, I was required to play an instrument in our Wind Band. One day during rehearsal, our director was trying to get us to experiment with our “artistic” side. Rather than giving us scenarios or prompts to fuel our expression, she gave us a color, a fabric, and a mood.
When we’re faced with abstract concepts, how are we supposed to unravel their meaning? If something was meant to be a blank slate, how can we give meaning to what is supposed to be nothing? Perhaps it can be as simple as a color, a type of fabric, and a mood. Would you like some examples?
Maroon, Velvet, Determined. Cyan, Chiffon, Melancholy. Crimson, Satin, Bold.
How about yourself? What colors will you see? What fabrics will you feel? What mood will stir inside of your heart?"
